One important component of my support as a Doula is to provide education and assistance with establishing a happy breastfeeding relationship.
Breastfeeding support happens in the hours after birth and in the days and months postpartum. I will come to your home and help you as you need, pointing you in the direction of more advanced help if needed.
I appreciate the fact that many soon-to-be moms will take breastfeeding classes and read up on materials before the big day, in preparation for breastfeeding. But when they actually hold their baby in their arms for the 1st time and begin to put into action what they had been taught – it becomes a whole different ball game! Many become frustrated when baby doesn’t have the perfect latch or when they feel like they are unable to keep up with the demands baby places on them. I will help moms with positioning, expressing, SNS feeding, developing a schedule, understanding supply and demand and promoting skin-to-skin.
One of the 1st lessons we learn as new parents is the importance of being FLEXIBLE. When it comes to breastfeeding, flexibility is key: this is a season, it won’t last forever. There will be challenges in the 1st weeks and months – ask for help. Get help with other duties so you can give your attention to feeding your baby and taking care of yourself. Recognize growth spurts and have nurse-ins as needed.
Recognize baby’s 1st cues – which come before crying.
